

Our Story
In 2003, I arrived in Malaysia with a suitcase full of books and a heart full of excitement. I had come to teach English—but what I discovered in the classroom quickly changed the course of my life. The students I met were bright, curious, and eager to learn. They had a good grasp of vocabulary and could fill in blanks with skill. But when it came to expressing their own thoughts, their own ideas, their own voices—they were silent. They were being taught to memorise, not to communicate. It broke my heart to see so much potential go untapped. After a year of teaching within a frustrating system that didn’t seem to serve the students it was meant to empower, I found myself at a crossroads. That’s when my wife—a proud Malaysian, whom I met while studying in the UK—challenged me with a simple question:
